Squirrels use fence tops, gate rails, wall copings and shed roofs as a road. A continuous run of these takes the road away without harming the animal.
It is one piece of weather resistant moulded plastic, so there is nothing to assemble and nothing that can rust in the sun and rain.

The same strip keeps cats and larger birds off a fence top too, which is often half the reason people buy it.
Squirrels do not perch the way birds do. They travel, and the routes they use are the flat, continuous surfaces around a house: fence tops, gate rails, wall copings, the edge of a shed roof.
A spike strip works by taking one of those routes away. The animal is not hurt. It meets a surface it cannot run along comfortably and goes another way.
That only works if the run is continuous. Cover the whole length and take the strip right into the post or wall at each end. A 40 cm gap is not a gap to a squirrel, it is the route.
Before you buy, look at what else touches the fence. A branch hanging over it, a roof edge, a water tank or a wall within jumping distance will defeat any fence-top strip, and pruning or moving it is often the bigger win.
Once it is up there is nothing to maintain beyond clearing leaf litter out once or twice a year, so nothing packs down into a walkway.

Is this the plastic or the stainless squirrel strip?
The plastic one. It is a single moulded plastic piece. The stainless steel version is on our anti-squirrel spikes page.
Which should I buy, plastic or stainless?
They cost the same. The plastic is quicker to fit on a long run and more visible. The stainless is thinner and almost invisible from the ground.
Will it hurt the squirrels?
No. The spikes are blunt moulded plastic. They make a surface awkward to run along, they do not injure anything.
How does it actually stop squirrels?
Squirrels use fence tops and wall copings as a road. Take the road away along its whole length and they go another way.
How long is one strip?
500 mm. Strips butt end to end, so a run is however many 50 cm strips it takes, rounded up.
Is there a minimum order?
No. Order one strip if that is all you need.
How many strips for a 10 metre fence?
Twenty. Order twenty one if the ends are awkward and you want a spare.
Do I have to assemble it?
No. It is one piece, ready to fix down.
How do I fix it?
Screws or nails through the foot into timber, glue or outdoor adhesive tape on masonry, and cable ties on metal railings.
Can I cut it to length?
Yes, between the segments, with a knife or snips.
Will it cope with the sun and rain?
Yes. The plastic is weather resistant and there is no metal in it, so nothing can rust or stain your wall.
Why are squirrels still getting over?
Usually a gap in the run, or a branch, roof edge or water tank within jumping distance. Cover the whole length and deal with whatever overhangs it.
Does a gap really matter?
A great deal. A squirrel steps over a short break without slowing down. Cover the run end to end and into the post at each end.
Will it keep cats off the fence too?
Yes. The same strip makes a fence top uncomfortable for cats, and for larger birds that like to sit on it.
Will it stop squirrels getting into my roof?
It takes away one route to the roof. If a squirrel is already living up there, the entry point has to be found and closed once the space is empty.
Can I put it on a shed roof?
Yes. Fix it along the ridge or the edge squirrels use to cross, with screws or adhesive.
Can I put it on a tree branch?
It can be tied to a branch that leads to your roof, but pruning the branch back is usually the better answer.
Is it safe around children and pets?
It is blunt, which is why people choose it for fences at reachable heights.
How visible is it?
Quite visible. On a boundary that is often the point, because animals and neighbours can both see it is there.
Will it fade or go brittle?
It is made for outdoor use in sun and rain. If a strip is ever damaged, you replace that one strip, not the run.
What maintenance does it need?

Should I buy this or the bird spikes?

How squirrels use your boundary
Squirrels are common around Thai homes, and they are at their most annoying when a fence or
wall gives them an easy road to a roof, a fruit tree or a bird feeder. They do not stand on
a fence top the way a bird does. They run along it.
That is what a spike strip changes. It turns a smooth, easy route into an awkward one, and
the animal goes elsewhere. Nothing is hurt.
Cover the whole run
Measure the full length of fence or wall the squirrels use, in metres, and double it,
because each strip is 50 cm. Round up. Then fit it continuously and take it right into the
post, wall or gate at each end. A squirrel will happily use a short bare section, so a
partial run teaches it exactly where to cross.
Look at what overhangs
Before you fit anything, stand back and look at what touches the fence. A branch hanging
over it, the edge of a roof, a water tank or a wall within jumping distance will defeat any
fence-top strip. Cutting a branch back is often the biggest single improvement you can make.
Fixing it down
Screws or nails through the foot into a timber fence rail or capping.
Glue or outdoor adhesive tape along a masonry or rendered wall top.
Cable ties on metal railings and gates, where nothing can be drilled.
Clean the surface first. Dust and old dirt stop adhesive gripping, and a strip that lifts at
one end is easier to cross.
